Louise Williamson

Senior Associate (Consultant)

At Canvas, Louise Williamson advises artists, art advisors, galleries, museums and government entities on a variety of commercial matters ranging from the acquisition and sale of art and cultural objects, artist commissions, authenticity issues and agency arrangements. Louise’s background as a private client lawyer puts her in a unique position to advise artists and artists’ estates on legacy planning.

Alongside her work at Canvas, Louise is Tax and Heritage Consultant at Bonhams Auctioneers where she advises on HMRC’s Conditional Exemption and Acceptance in Lieu schemes, available in the UK to owners of pre-eminent works of art and cultural objects, as well as other tax and heritage issues which affect Bonhams’ clients.

Prior to joining Canvas, Louise trained and qualified into the private client team at Withers LLP, where she worked for nearly 10 years, specialising in international tax and estate planning. She was lead associate of the private client art law practice in London and a member of Withers’ firm-wide art law team. She advised on a range of art-related matters, including suitable structures for holding art; remittance issues for UK-resident and non-domiciled individuals purchasing art; the import and export of art; and anti-money laundering regulations.
